HUTAN, through the community-based “Kinabatangan Orangutan Conservation Programme” (KOCP), empowers local communities to manage and protect wildlife in the Kinabatangan.

HUTAN is a team of 80 dedicated men and women from the local community working since 1998 in Kinabatangan, Borneo.

  • We conduct scientific field research to enhance the knowledge of the ecology and conservation status of orangutans, elephants, hornbills and other wildlife in fragmented and degraded habitat.
  • We reduce pressure on wildlife populations and restore habitats.
  • We enhance human resource capacity and commitment to manage and conserve wildlife populations in Sabah.
  • We contribute to improving policy framework for wildlife protection and management within and outside of protected areas.
