HUTAN, through the community-based “Kinabatangan Orangutan Conservation Programme” (KOCP), empowers local communities to manage and protect wildlife in the Kinabatangan.
WHO WE ARE
HUTAN is a team of 80 dedicated men and women from the local community working since 1998 in Kinabatangan, Borneo.
WHAT WE DO
HUTAN collaborates with a diverse network of local and international partners to develop a holistic approach to conservation, combining scientific research, ecosystem protection and management, capacity building and awareness raising.
With the KOCP, HUTAN is securing a future for wildlife outside of protected areas by designing and implementing ways for people and wildlife to co-exist peacefully.
- We conduct scientific field research to enhance the knowledge of the ecology and conservation status of orangutans, elephants, hornbills and other wildlife in fragmented and degraded habitat.
- We reduce pressure on wildlife populations and restore habitats.
- We enhance human resource capacity and commitment to manage and conserve wildlife populations in Sabah.
- We contribute to improving policy framework for wildlife protection and management within and outside of protected areas.
