Our Reforestation Team were visited by Al-Jazeera‘s Earthrise filming crew for a piece they are doing on reforestation. At HUTAN – KOCP we focus on ensuring survival rates and we plant on a smaller scale compared to other reforestation projects to ensure that we have a 100% survival rate for our areas. In 2010, this team planted a total of 4,932 native species in four planting areas. This was increased to 6,357 trees planted in 2011 as a new area was included for reforestation work. This brings the current areas under maintenance to five.
The filming crew with correspondent Steve Chao spent time with the Reforestation Team trying to capture all that this team does from clearing a new area, to planting new saplings to the tiresome work of maintaining the planting areas to ensure that the saplings survive. While they the crew also spent time with our Orang-utan Research Staff and our Wildlife Warden‘s who manage our Orang-utan Bridges, the focus of their programme this time around was on Reforestation.
